Value, volume and price are moving at different speeds.
Builders Merchants Federation data for Q2 2026 shows total merchant sales values 1.2% below the same period last year, with volumes 6.6% lower and average prices 5.8% higher. The quarter-on-quarter picture was stronger: despite two fewer trading days, value sales increased 14% from Q1 to Q2 and volumes increased 16%, with seven of twelve categories recording growth.
A market adjusting at different speeds gives merchants a stronger reason to manage stock at product level and compare suppliers actively.
Timber and panel data reinforces the value of product-level intelligence.
UK timber and panel-product imports were 3.9% lower in the first half of 2026 than in the same period of 2025, while panel products overall were 2.5% lower. Individual categories behaved differently: plywood volumes fell, while OSB imports increased 2.3%, particleboard increased 4.6%, MDF increased 13.1% and tropical hardwood increased 3.5%.
For merchants, that means a category that is slowing can sit alongside another that is expanding. Purchasing decisions can adapt to actual customer demand rather than a single market-wide signal.
Independent merchants can extend their local flexibility into procurement.
Independent builders’ merchants already understand their local customers and can respond quickly to demand. Building relationships with additional wholesale suppliers gives them more options when comparing products, planning stock, negotiating volume requirements or responding to changes in availability.
That is the part of the market FENCYX is built to serve: selected building-material categories, wholesale purchasing and a merchant-first route from pallet requirements through to larger-volume supply.
The supply network behind the merchant relationship is changing.
The 2026 market is neither uniformly positive nor uniformly negative. It is more selective. Product knowledge, customer relationships, local presence and service remain central to the independent merchant proposition; what is changing is the range of supply routes available behind those strengths.
FENCYX aims to become part of that network by bringing competitive wholesale sourcing across boards and plasterboards, hardwood-faced plywood, insulation and roofing felt to the UK market.
